Manipur Unrest: Committee on Tribal Unity Imposes ‘Indefinite Economic Blockade’ in state

Northeast Desk, 16th November: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in Sadar Hills Kangpokpi initiated an ‘Indefinite Economic Blockade’ in Manipur starting midnight. Expressing strong condemnation for what they perceive as an indifferent attitude from authorities regarding law and order in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas, CoTU decided to enforce the blockade along National Highway-2 and 37.

Volunteers were deployed to monitor vehicle movement on the highways, with a focus on checking essential items being transported. CoTU instructed its volunteers to rigorously implement the economic blockade at various locations on both highways.

The committee highlighted its agitation for a meaningful resolution on different aspects, expressing frustration that their demands have consistently been ignored. They emphasized the unconditional release of two allegedly innocent Kuki-Zo individuals on grounds of illegal detention and the impartial execution of law and order.

CoTU criticized the state’s apparent failure in upholding the constitutional machinery and accused authorities of neglecting democratic principles. The committee affirmed its determination for justice, warning against any perceived systematic subjugation, which they vowed to address firmly.

To enforce the economic blockade effectively, CoTU prepared a duty roster for monitoring the movement of essential vehicles along the highways. The situation is unfolding amid tensions in the region, and authorities are urged to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised by CoTU.
