Manipur: Uripok Relay Hunger Strike Enters 38th Day Demanding Justice for Jiribam Victims
Imphal: The indefinite relay hunger strike organised by the Uripok Apunba Lup and Uripok Apunba Nupi Lup at Uripok Canteen Crossing in Imphal has entered its 38th day today.
The protest is being staged to demand the arrest and punishment of those responsible for the abduction and killing of three women and three children in Jiribam district last month.
One of the protesters stated that despite the hunger strike exceeding a month, the state government has yet to apprehend the individuals involved in this heinous crime, a deeply concerning situation.
Expressing grave concern over the safety and security of women and children in the state, the protesters highlighted the existence of stringent national laws and regulations designed to protect women and children and prevent crimes against them. However, they lamented that these protections appear to be ineffective in Manipur.
The protesters reiterated their commitment to continuing the relay hunger strike until their demands are met. It is pertinent to note that family members of six individuals from the Meitei community, including three children, were abducted and brutally murdered by Kuki militants in Jiribam district last month. This tragic incident ignited widespread tension, which was later brought under control after several days of protests.
