Manipur Violence: Govt extends ban on Internet services till July 10

National desk, 6 July: The state government of Manipur confirmed on Wednesday to further extend the ban on internet services in the state until July 10, 2023, as tensions in the region continues.

According to a Manipur Home Department directive, precautions are being made to avoid serious risks to human life, property damage and extensive disturbances of public peace.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 2 of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, having satisfied that the situation is likely to cause serious disturbances to the peaceful co-existence and maintenance of public order, do hereby order further suspension/curbing of mobile data services, internet/data services including broadband viz. Reliance Jio Fibre, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, VPN etc. and internet/data services through VSATS of Bharatnet Phase-II in the territorial jurisdiction of the State of Manipur,” stated the official notification.

According to the official notification, this order will take effect immediately and will remain in effect for an additional five days until 3:00 pm on July 10 with immediate effect.

It continued by expressing concern that some antisocial elements may heavily utilise social media to disseminate hate speech, images, and videos, inciting the public’s emotions and potentially having a very detrimental effect on Manipur’s law and order situation.

Prior to that, schools managed by the Manipur government’s Department of Education (Schools) reopened and started regular lessons for Grades 1 to 8 after being closed for more than two months due to ethnic strife.
