Manipur: World Mental Health Day Observed in Imphal

Imphal: In a significant effort to promote mental well-being, World Mental Health Day was observed today in Imphal, organized by the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) under the National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur, in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services. The event took place at Imphal Hotel, uniting health officials, advocates, and stakeholders to address the pressing issues surrounding mental health.

Dr. Athokpam Ranita, the State Nodal Officer for NMHP Manipur, emphasized the importance of this global observance, which has been celebrated annually on October 10 since 1994. “Each year, World Mental Health Day is marked with a different theme aimed at fostering education, awareness, and advocacy against the stigma surrounding mental health,” Dr. Ranita noted, highlighting the significance of ongoing discussions and initiatives in this domain.

This year’s theme, “It is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,” resonated strongly in the context of the post-pandemic world. Dr. Ranita pointed out that with 60% of the global population in employment and workers spending a substantial portion of their time at work, the workplace has become a critical environment for mental well-being. She revealed that approximately 15% of working-age adults experience mental disorders at any given moment, underscoring the urgent need for mental health initiatives in professional settings.

Dr. Ranita further highlighted the observance’s role in promoting global citizenship and awareness about mental health, urging organizations to foster healthier workspaces. Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO), she stated that depression and anxiety lead to an estimated global economic loss of US$1 trillion in productivity each year. “Creating a supportive work environment is crucial not only for employee well-being but also for boosting overall productivity,” she explained.

The event also featured distinguished guests, including Hungyo Worshang, Special Secretary for Health & Family Welfare in the Government of Manipur; Dr. O. Sanahanbi Devi, Director of Health Services, Manipur; and Dr. M. Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director, NHM, Manipur. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to addressing mental health issues within the state.

As part of the day’s activities, winners of a painting competition centered on the theme of mental health were recognized and celebrated, further encouraging public engagement in mental health advocacy. The competition aimed to inspire creativity and dialogue around mental health, highlighting its importance in everyday life.

The observance of World Mental Health Day in Imphal served as a powerful reminder of the need to prioritize mental health in all aspects of life, particularly in the workplace, fostering a culture of support and understanding that benefits individuals and society as a whole.
