Manipur’s Bishworjit Konthoujam Signs with Tynemouth Cricket Club, Becomes First from State in ECB League

Imphal: Bishworjit Konthoujam has scripted history by becoming the first cricketer from Manipur to sign with an English club under the England Cricket Board (ECB). His signing with Tynemouth Cricket Club marks a significant milestone for Manipur cricket, opening new doors for aspiring players from the northeastern state.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh celebrated the achievement on social media, calling it “a proud moment for Manipur cricket”, and stating that it will serve as an inspiration for thousands of young cricketers across the state and the country.

Konthoujam, who hails from Patsoi Part IV, has been a standout performer in domestic cricket since his debut in 2018. His breakthrough came during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, where he took 30 wickets in eight matches, emerging as Manipur’s highest wicket-taker and ranking among India’s top ten bowlers that season. His dominance continued through 2023-24, leading Manipur’s bowling attack in both the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the 2024-25 season, he further solidified his reputation, claiming 42 wickets across all formats.

As he prepares for the English season starting April 19, Konthoujam faces a new challenge—adapting to the swing-friendly conditions of northern England. His ability to adjust his bowling to seam movement and overcast conditions will be key to his success in the ECB circuit, making this a defining chapter in his career.
