Manipur’s Environmental Champions Unite for Massive Reforestation Drive
Imphal: In a powerful display of environmental stewardship, three prominent organisations in Manipur today kicked off an ambitious reforestation campaign in Imphal West district, transforming World Environment Day from a mere observance into a day of tangible action.
The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organization (AMUCO), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), and Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) joined forces to plant hundreds of saplings, signaling a robust community-led effort to combat environmental degradation in the region.
The day saw approximately 300 saplings find new homes around the Cheiraoching foothills in Thangmeiband, with the collective vision extending to over 2,000 more trees planned for higher elevations in the coming weeks. This initiative stands out as one of the largest community-driven environmental pushes witnessed in Manipur this year. Hijam Roshan, president of the Manipuri Students’ Federation, underscored the profound importance of trees, stating, “Trees are vital for mitigating climate change and preserving ecological balance,” during the vigorous plantation drive.
The collaborative spirit was evident as key figures actively participated in the endeavour. Dr. Norendro Thokchom, vice-president of AMUCO, alongside Secretary General Pratap Leishangthem, and MSF General Secretary Sundar Khuman, were among those lending their support. Dozens of dedicated volunteers from various corners of Imphal West district also joined the day-long activity, meticulously planting saplings and contributing to the greening of the landscape.
Roshan also passionately highlighted the crucial need for sustained aftercare for the newly planted saplings. He stressed that genuine reforestation demands a long-term commitment that extends well beyond the initial act of planting, acknowledging that follow-up care is paramount for the trees’ survival and growth. Furthermore, he voiced strong concerns about the prevalent commercial tree felling practices that continue to inflict considerable damage upon local ecosystems, urging for more responsible environmental practices.
The strategic choice of Cheiraoching for this extensive plantation drive was deliberate, owing to its significant ecological importance. The area’s varying elevations offer a unique opportunity to introduce diverse tree species, which in turn will bolster the region’s overall environmental resilience. The subsequent plantings slated for higher elevations in the coming weeks will specifically focus on species that are well-adapted to different climatic conditions, ensuring a more robust and sustainable ecological impact.
With environmental degradation increasingly becoming a pressing concern across Manipur, community-driven conservation efforts like this are gaining critical importance. The three partnering organisations collectively emphasised that robust policy enforcement, coupled with sustained and unified collective action, remains absolutely essential for effectively safeguarding the invaluable natural resources of the state.
