Manipur’s Senapati River Cleansing Surge: 20 Tonnes of Waste Removed in Massive Community Effort

Imphal: In a determined push to revitalize the Senapati River, Deputy Commissioner Mamoni Doley, IAS, spearheaded a large-scale cleanliness drive, marking a significant step in the ongoing ‘Clean Senapati River Campaign.’

The operation, focused on the polluted stretch between the Senapati Bridge and the Monday Market Bridge, witnessed the removal of over 20 tonnes of mixed waste, a testament to the community’s resolve.

The day’s activities saw a remarkable mobilization of approximately 500 volunteers, encompassing district officials from various departments including the Revenue Department, ADC, and DRDA. Key figures such as Rang David Kung, MCS, ADM/ADC Senapati, Adahrii Maheo, MCS, ADC/CEO Senapati, and P. P. Ronald, MCS, Project Director, DRDA Senapati, were actively involved. The drive specifically targeted ‘black spot’ areas, regions plagued by excessive waste accumulation, and aimed to finalize previously incomplete cleaning efforts.

The community spirit was palpable, with significant participation from civil society organizations including the Senapati District Students Association (SDSA), Karong Senapati Town Committee (KSTC), Poumai Naga Tsiidoumai Me (PNTM), Maralui Karailimai Swuijoikang (MKS), and Zeliangrong Students Union (ZSU). Local youth clubs and residents also lent their support, highlighting a unified commitment to the river’s restoration. The Karong Senapati Town Committee facilitated the disposal of the collected waste at a designated site, ensuring proper management.

The District Administration has now charged local authorities and youth organizations with the responsibility of maintaining rigorous vigilance to prevent future pollution incidents. This directive underscores the administration’s commitment to long-term sustainability and the preservation of the river’s ecological health.

The ‘Clean Senapati River Campaign’ is a comprehensive initiative designed to restore and safeguard the Senapati River, recognized as the lifeblood of the town. Through a combination of cleaning drives, public awareness campaigns, and extensive community involvement, the initiative aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship. The collaborative efforts of the District Administration, ADC, KSTC, civil society organizations, village leaders, and volunteers are central to the campaign’s success, emphasizing the collective responsibility in ensuring the river’s long-term cleanliness and sustainability.
