Manipur’s “War on Drugs” Yields Major Gains in Anti-Poppy Operations
Imphal: Manipur Police filed an FIR on December 12 following the destruction of approximately 14 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Thonglang Akutpa village, Kangpokpi. The operation, conducted on December 10 in collaboration with the Forest Department, is part of the state’s intensified “War on Drugs” campaign.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh commended the coordinated efforts of the Ukhrul police, Forest Department, BSF, and district administration for eliminating 45 acres of poppy fields in the Mapithel hill range, Phungyar. During the operation, two individuals, Letkhohao Haokip (37) and Hegou Khongsai (30), were apprehended.
Illegal poppy cultivation has been a recurring issue in the state. On December 6, security forces destroyed 30 acres of poppy fields in Ukhrul district, arresting four individuals. Earlier, on December 5, police cleared 8.6 acres of poppy fields near the Makuilongdi jungle in Senapati district.
Beyond combating drug cultivation, security forces have heightened their focus on illegal arms and militant activities. On December 11, Manipur Police and Assam Rifles arrested three cadres of the militant group PREPAK (Pro) in Thoubal district for extortion and arms possession. Additionally, operations in Chandel and Churachandpur districts led to the recovery of significant arms caches, including an AK-47 rifle, local-made mortars, live bombs, and other firearms.
These decisive actions highlight Manipur’s dual approach to curbing both drug cultivation and insurgency-related activities, reflecting the state’s commitment to restoring peace and order.
