Margherita Highlights Modi Government’s Push for Connectivity and Growth in Mizoram

AIZAWL—Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, underscored the Modi government’s strong commitment to infrastructure, connectivity, and inclusive development in Mizoram and the Northeast, during a media interaction in Aizawl. Addressing a query from India Today NE, Margherita affirmed that Mizoram would play a vital role in India’s cultural, tourism, and trade strategies on the global stage.

Calling the Northeast a region of immense cultural richness and untapped economic potential, the minister noted that the Modi government has actively prioritized its growth after decades of neglect. “For 60 years post-Independence, the Northeast remained stagnant. That has changed. Today, the region is witnessing transformation in both peace and development,” Margherita said.

He announced that under the current administration, ministers from the Centre will visit Mizoram and other northeastern states every fortnight to monitor ongoing development projects and gain firsthand insights into regional needs. This, he stressed, is part of a broader effort to decentralize oversight and accelerate implementation on the ground.

Highlighting connectivity as a major thrust area, Margherita revealed that Mizoram is set to be linked to the national railway network for the first time—an initiative that will bridge long-standing logistical gaps. “Whether it’s through roads, airways, or digital networks, Mizoram is now more connected to India and the world than ever before,” he added.

The minister further noted that the central government has significantly increased infrastructure funding for northeastern states, with Mizoram benefiting from a larger share than in previous regimes. He pointed to upcoming projects like the Integrated Check Post and a bridge at Kawrpuichhuah village near the Indo-Bangladesh border, which are expected to boost cross-border trade and connectivity.

Reiterating the Ministry of External Affairs’ dedication to regional development, Margherita concluded, “We are not just committed to building roads and bridges, but to empowering Mizoram to become a strong link in India’s cultural and trade diplomacy.”
