Mass Protests Erupt at Imphal’s Iconic Ima Keithel Over Abductions and Killings in Manipur

Imphal: Imphal witnessed a surge of protests on Saturday, November 16, as demonstrators gathered at the historic Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Asia’s largest all-women market, to voice outrage over the recent abduction and killing of six people, including children, in Jiribam.

Vendors and residents united at the marketplace, turning it into the focal point of public grief and anger. The incident, which involved the kidnapping and brutal murder of six individuals, has left the state reeling in shock.

Protesters demanded justice for the victims, with many expressing frustration at the government’s inability to prevent such heinous acts. Slogans echoed through the streets as demonstrators called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Adding fuel to the unrest was the recent re-imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police jurisdictions across Manipur. Protesters criticized the move as counterproductive, describing the Act as a draconian measure that exacerbates public fear and alienation.

The protest underscored a growing call for accountability and peace in a state deeply scarred by violence and mistrust.
