Massive Earthquakes Strike Myanmar, Ava Bridge Collapses into Irrawaddy River

International: Two powerful earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, struck Myanmar on March 28, causing widespread tremors that reached as far as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital. The epicentre of the quakes was located near Sagaing, triggering significant damage, including the collapse of the historic Ava Bridge in Mandalay into the Irrawaddy River.

The tremors were felt across vast regions, with Bangkok—located approximately 900 km away—experiencing strong shocks. The intensity of the quake forced residents to evacuate buildings as structures swayed and water sloshed out of swimming pools in high-rise apartments. Despite the panic, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the Thai capital.

The Ava Bridge, a critical structure connecting Mandalay with the Sagaing region, succumbed to the violent tremors, raising concerns about further structural damage and the impact on local transportation.

Authorities in both Myanmar and Thailand are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency teams have been mobilized to assess the extent of the damage, and aftershocks remain a possibility.

This is a developing story.
