Massive Eviction Drive at Doloo Tea Estate in Assam’s Cachar
Guwahati: A huge eviction drive is underway at the Doloo tea estate in Silchar in Cachar district of Assam.
Around 200 excavators are evicting people from the tea estate’s 2,500 bighas of land.
A Greenfield airport is being built in the vicinity, and the land is being cleared.
GP Singh, Special Director General of Police (DGP), Law and Order, is in charge of the eviction operation.
During the eviction, a large police force and the Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF) have been deployed to keep the peace and order.
Meanwhile, the situation became tense after a fight broke out between tea garden employees and police. Hundreds of workers have expressed strong resistance to the eviction. They are preventing the eviction by demanding that the authorities halt the eviction because the tea garden is their only source of income.
Police officials have been dispatched to put the situation under control. On the other hand, Section 144 has been implemented in some areas.
It may be mentioned that despite the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the tea garden management, garden unions, and district administration in March this year, the tea garden labourers have taken strong opposition to the establishment of the Greenfield Airport.
