Massive Landslides Block NH-29 in Nagaland, Prompting Urgent Traffic Advisory

Northeast Desk, 4th September: In a significant disruption to Nagaland’s key transportation route, massive landslides have rendered National Highway-29 (NH-29) impassable, completely blocking all vehicular traffic between Kohima and Dimapur. The landslides, which occurred at Pherima, Tseipama/Piphema, and Pagala Pahar/New Chumoukedima, have severely damaged sections of the highway, with one stretch entirely washed away.

The district administration has issued an urgent advisory, urging citizens to avoid traveling on NH-29 and to exercise extreme caution in the affected areas. The advisory also cautions against using alternative routes via Pimla-Mhainamtsi, which have similarly been compromised by mudslides.

For those needing to travel between Kohima and Dimapur, the Niuland-Kohima route via Zhadima has been designated for light motor vehicles (LMVs) only. Heavy vehicles are strictly prohibited on this route due to safety concerns.

In response to widespread reports of panic buying of essential commodities and fuel, authorities have reassured the public that there is no shortage of supplies. The district administration of Kohima is actively coordinating with neighboring districts to maintain a steady flow of essential goods through alternative routes.

Residents are advised to stay informed of further updates and to plan their travel cautiously as search and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.
