Massive Landslides Impairs Sikkim

Due to continuous rainfall in Sikkim since last four days massive landslides incidents are being reported from the state. Most parts of Sikkim have being affected by heavy landslides and the North Sikkim part has been totally cut off from rest of the state due to the landslides occurrence in many of it’s areas.

The entire North Sikkim is cut off and is badly effected as the rain continuous till the latest report. The District Magistrate, Tenzing T Kaleon said the entire North Sikkim is effected due to heavy rainfall and more than 12 families have been shifted to their relatives as their houses have been damaged by landslides. He informed that upper reaches of North Sikkim specially Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung area have been disconnected due to landslides at Ramfong with North District headquarter and is waiting for reports from Sub-Divisional Office at Chungthang assessing the damages caused by the insecant rainfall adding the he himself in field to excess damages and is creating a suitable place for temporary settlement if needed in the district to save life of the people who were at risk.

Both the North Sikkim Highways connecting from Gangtok Tashi view point at Ramthang and Dikchu-Mangan road is also closed due to landslides at Sokpay at Dikchu and Namok Khola.
The border Road Organization have pressed their work force to clear the landslides and slips, however, it is difficult to clear as rain continuous until now.

District Magistrate also informed that Mangan Rangrang road is closed at old Church area below Mangan adding that the road at Hee-Gyathang – Goan Samdong in Dzongu area is blocked at Samdong in middle Dzongu. The road leading towards Ridhang at Dzongu is also blocked. However, the road towards Gangtok from Ramthang to Tashi view point is clear. In the east, the huge landslide washed away the Highway at Aap Dara near NHPC Stage V project and have reported to damaged Hydro Power project site.
