Massive Marksheet Scam Uncovered at Guwahati University; Nine Arrested

Guwahati, 29th June: In a startling revelation, the Barpeta Road police have apprehended nine individuals involved in a large-scale marksheet scam at Guwahati University. Authorities disclosed that marks on student marksheets were fraudulently increased through illicit monetary transactions.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the gravity of the situation during a visit to Barpeta on Thursday. He confirmed that the Assam Police and the CID are conducting a joint investigation, resulting in the arrest of eight accused individuals thus far.

The scam was brought to light when officials at Ganeshlal Choudhury College (GLC College) in Barpeta Road detected discrepancies in the marks of Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student. Promptly, a case was registered at the Barpeta Road police station, although initial investigations by district police were reportedly insufficient, leading to Haque’s release from custody.

The Chief Minister was alerted to the mishandling of the case by local media, prompting him to direct a thorough probe. Subsequently, the investigation revealed the involvement of several university and college staff members in the fraudulent activities.

Among those apprehended are Krishnan Krishnamurthy from Samastipur, Bihar, employed at Gauhati University, and Shivtosh Mahto, a junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College. The arrests were made through coordinated raids by Barpeta and Dhubri police.

The nine accused individuals are:

  1. Azizul Haque
  2. Krishnan Krishnamurthy, Gauhati University staff from Samastipur, Bihar
  3. Ismail Hussain from Kalgachia
  4. Alamgir Khan from Amguri, Kalgachia
  5. Moinul Haque from Bordanga, Kalgachia
  6. Hamez Uddin from Nagaon
  7. Aminul Islam, librarian at Langla College
  8. Shivtosh Mahto, junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College
  9. Abul Bacher from Langla Kalgachia

The accused individuals face charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, with ongoing investigations likely to lead to further arrests. Police authorities have refrained from providing further details to the media as the investigation progresses. This scandal has raised significant concerns regarding academic integrity and the security of the examination system at Gauhati University.
