Medals Tally Rises To 19 With 5 Golds in CWG 2022 Round-Up
Guwahati: Murali Sreeshankar bags the silver medal in the men’s long jump final event to complete another historic feat at the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG), being the first man from India to do so on Day 7.
Sreeshankar finished second and won the silver medal with a jump of 8.08 metres.
In another event, India’s first gold medal in Para-Powerlifting at the CWG went to Para-Powerlifter Sudhir. In the championship match, he defeated Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichukwu (133.5 points) by 0.9 points to earn gold.
In addition, Indian boxers Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboria, Sagar, and Rohit Tokas all advanced to their individual semi-finals, ensuring medals for the country as well.
A must-win game saw the Indian men’s hockey team upset Wales to go to the semi-finals, and sprinter Hima Das qualified for the women’s 200 m semifinals.
The badminton team’s P V Sindhu, Kidamni Srikanth, and Lakshya Sen advanced in their opening singles bouts.
Manika Batra, the current table tennis champion, also advanced, while in the double’s competitions Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and paddler Sharath Kamal did as well.
Dipika Pallikal of Sqaush won the women’s doubles match as well as the mixed doubles event.
A modest 19 medals, including 5 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze, have been won by the nation at the CWG.
It should be mentioned that a 12-member Indian wrestling squad, comprising Olympic medalists Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, is scheduled to start their CWG campaign on Day 8 of the athletic event.
