Mega Rubber Nursery in Meghalaya Set to Transform Northeast’s Agro-Industrial Landscape

Guwahati: A landmark rubber nursery has been established at Jirang in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, ushering in a new era of agricultural and industrial development in the Northeast.

Developed under the supervision of the Rubber Board of India, the nursery—named Omega Green Solutions—represents a strategic initiative to boost domestic rubber production and reduce India’s reliance on imports.

Set up in 2021 with a staggering investment of Rs 1,100 crore, the project is backed by four of India’s top tyre manufacturing giants. Its proximity to Guwahati enhances logistical advantages, making it a key asset in the regional supply chain for rubber cultivation and processing.

On Tuesday, a high-level delegation led by Rubber Board Executive Director M. Basantaketan and Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA) Chairman Arun Mammen toured the facility to assess its progress. The team was joined by industry stakeholders and officials from both the rubber and tyre sectors.

During the visit, Basantaketan underscored the nursery’s economic impact, noting that it has already provided employment for hundreds of local youths and is igniting a wave of rubber cultivation across surrounding areas. He lauded the project as a game-changer for the rural economy, one that aligns with national goals of agricultural sustainability and industrial self-reliance.

Echoing this sentiment, ATMA Chairman Arun Mammen highlighted the nursery’s regional significance, stating that it will support rubber cultivation not only in Assam but throughout the Northeast. The long-term objective is to bring 3,000 hectares under rubber plantation, positioning the region as a cornerstone in India’s tyre manufacturing ecosystem.

The rubber saplings being cultivated at Omega Green Solutions are expected to mature over the next seven years, after which they will contribute to a steady stream of latex production. This is anticipated to generate sustainable income for local farmers and further entrench the region’s role in India’s rubber economy.

The project stands as a testament to public-private collaboration, and with its economic, agricultural, and industrial potential, it is being hailed as a beacon for empowerment and development across the Northeast.
