Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma Endorses ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal
Northeast Desk, 23th September: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma has expressed his support for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative recently approved by the Union Cabinet. Sangma described the proposal as a logical and practical step for India, aimed at streamlining the country’s election process.
The initiative, based on a report by a panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, proposes simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, urban bodies, and panchayats within the next 100 days. Sangma emphasized that this system would be an effective solution to the frequent elections that consume significant time, energy, and resources.
Sangma stressed the importance of public opinion on the matter, noting that while elections are currently held every year for state assemblies and by-polls, a unified election process could simplify the system. However, he also pointed out the need for a political evaluation of the scheme, acknowledging that while people may support the idea at the national level, individual preferences might differ at the state level.
