Meghalaya at risk of losing Railway Project over land acquisition delays
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has raised concerns about the potential cancellation of a crucial railway project due to ongoing land acquisition issues.
The Rs 200 crore project, which includes the Tetelia-Byrnihat and Byrnihat-Shillong lines, has been facing delays due to opposition from local communities.
During a recent meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Sangma emphasized the need for community consensus before proceeding with the project.
However, the minister expressed concern over the stalled progress and warned that if the land acquisition issues are not resolved within a few months, the allocated funds might be withdrawn, and the project could be scrapped in favour of other regional projects.
The Tetelia-Byrnihat line, in particular, has faced significant opposition due to concerns about an influx of outsiders.
Sangma requested more time to address the concerns of the local communities and ensure their participation in the decision-making process.
