Meghalaya Authorities Issue Warning as Umiam Dam Water Levels Near Capacity

Northeast Desk, 22nd August: The Ri Bhoi District administration in Meghalaya has issued a warning to residents as the Umiam Dam’s water levels approach maximum capacity. As of August 13, the water level had reached 3209.68 feet, prompting concerns that heavy rainfall could necessitate the release of water from the dam.

In an official press release, the Deputy Commissioner advised those living downstream of the Umiam Dam to exercise extreme caution. Residents have been urged to avoid rivers and streams to prevent accidents, particularly as the monsoon season brings the potential for heavy rainfall.

The administration also highlighted the risk of electrocution in the event of flooding, cautioning people to stay clear of electric poles and power lines.

As the region braces for more rain, the Umiam Dam, which plays a crucial role in flood control and power generation, is under close monitoring. Authorities are encouraging local communities to stay updated on weather conditions and adhere to safety guidelines to mitigate risks during this period.
