Meghalaya Awaits Hungarian Embassy’s Decision on Repatriation of Deceased Tourist

Shillong: The state government of Meghalaya is currently in a holding pattern, awaiting official communication from the Hungarian Embassy concerning the repatriation of Puskas Zsolt. The Hungarian national had been reported missing on March 29th and was tragically discovered deceased in the Shella region of the state.

Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang addressed the media on Sunday, confirming the lack of any formal response from the Hungarian authorities up to that point. The DGP explicitly stated, “We have not heard from the Hungarian authorities yet,” indicating the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the next phase of the process.

Following the discovery of Mr. Zsolt’s body on April 10th, authorities took immediate steps to transfer the remains to the Shillong Civil Hospital. The body is currently being held in the hospital’s morgue, awaiting the necessary directives and clearances that will facilitate its eventual return to Hungary.

The preliminary findings of the magistrate’s inquest into the circumstances of Mr. Zsolt’s death suggest a tragic accident. The inquest report indicates that the tourist may have succumbed to injuries sustained after falling from a significant height along a steep slope. Officials who examined the body noted multiple injuries that appeared consistent with a high-impact fall.
