Meghalaya: Bethany Hospitals to Suspend OPD Services on August 17 Amid Nationwide Protest

Northeast Desk, August 16: Bethany Hospitals will suspend outpatient services across its facilities in Meghalaya on August 17, as part of a nationwide protest initiated by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The decision comes in response to a recent tragic incident involving medical professionals in Kolkata.

The suspension will affect Bethany’s locations in Shillong, Nongpoh, Umsning, and Bymihat, with the hospital group joining the broader call for improved safety and respect for healthcare workers. Despite the closure of OPD services, emergency departments will remain fully operational to meet critical care needs.

Dr. Kyntiewlang Sanmiet, spokesperson for Bethany Hospitals, underscored the significance of the protest. “Our participation reflects the urgent need to address the safety concerns of healthcare professionals,” he stated, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect those who serve on the front lines of healthcare.

In a show of solidarity, Bethany Hospitals will also hold candlelight vigils at its Shillong and Nongpoh premises at 6:00 pm on August 16, honoring the victims of violence against healthcare workers.

The hospital administration has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to patients and appealed for public understanding during this period of advocacy. “We recognize the impact on our patients and ask for their support as we stand up for the rights and safety of healthcare workers,” Dr. Sanmiet added.

The protest marks a critical moment for healthcare professionals across the country, as they call for stronger protections and greater respect in their workplaces.
