Meghalaya BJP Calls for National Recognition of U Tirot Sing on His Death Anniversary

Northeast Desk, 18th July: On the 189th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) advocated for national recognition of the Khasi chief and freedom fighter. The party urged the Central government to honor his legacy by unveiling a portrait of U Tirot Sing in Parliament.

At a commemorative ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in Shillong, State Vice President Khrawboklang Basaiawmoit, National Council member David Kharsati, and State Chief Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang reiterated the party’s longstanding requests. They urged the postal department to issue a commemorative stamp in honor of U Tirot Sing and appealed to the Education Ministry to include his inspiring story in history textbooks nationwide.

Dr. Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of U Tirot Sing’s sacrifice and legacy in Meghalaya’s history.

The day-long activities organized by the state BJP included tributes and a cleaning drive at U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue at the State Central Library in Shillong. Similar programs were conducted in Nongkhlaw and other districts, underscoring the widespread reverence for U Tirot Sing among the party’s supporters and activists.

The Meghalaya BJP’s initiatives aim to ensure that U Tirot Sing’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle resonate across generations, both within the state and nationwide.
