Meghalaya: BJP Vice President Claims Tura MP Saleng Sangma Sought Support in General Elections
Northeast Desk, 12th August: In a recent interview, Bernard Marak, Vice President of the Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Tura MDC, claimed that Saleng Sangma, the Tura Lok Sabha MP, had sought support from the BJP during the Lok Sabha general elections earlier this year.
Marak’s comments come ahead of the Gambegre bypolls. He alleged that Sangma should be grateful to the BJP for not fielding a candidate against him, asserting that Sangma had even requested Marak not to contest as an Independent. According to Marak, if the BJP had contested, Sangma’s victory margin would have been significantly reduced.
Marak expressed confusion over Sangma’s criticism of the BJP, suggesting that Sangma should instead show appreciation for the support he received. He further noted that BJP supporters in Garo Hills were reluctant to support the National People’s Party (NPP), despite directives from the BJP’s central high command.
The BJP’s involvement and strategic decisions are under scrutiny as the Gambegre bypolls approach. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that his wife, Mehtab Chandee, will contest the bypolls, a decision he attributed to public demand.
