Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Shillong Urban Mobility Policy 2024
Northeast Desk, 9th February: The Meghalaya cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, greenlit the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy 2024 during its meeting today. CM Sangma took to social media platform X to announce the approval, emphasizing the policy’s focus on enhancing public transportation and creating walking and parking spaces in Shillong.
“Cabinet approved the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy 2024. As mandated by GoI to ensure mobility improves in Shillong, a policy had to be formulated which should include aspects of public transportation, creation of walking and parking spaces, etc,” said CM Sangma.
Additionally, the cabinet also sanctioned amendments to the Meghalaya Building Bye Laws 2021, aimed at ensuring the safety of buildings in a burgeoning city like Shillong.
“Cabinet also approved the Amendments to the Meghalaya Building Bye Laws 2021 for sustainable urban development in Meghalaya. The Amendments are being put in place in line with provisions of GoI, to ensure safety of buildings, ensure proper utilization of land for smaller landowners, permissible height of buildings, etc,” added the Meghalaya CM on X.
CM Sangma further explained, “Both the Amendment and Policy have been adopted so the State can avail the Special Assistance on Capital Investment for Urban Areas Scheme.”
He highlighted that the Centre has allocated Rs 15,000 crore for the scheme, with certain guidelines and policies necessitated. The government has proposed Rs 619 crore for Meghalaya, with approvals nearing Rs 500 crore, and an additional Rs 100 crore expected post-implementation of the amendments and policies.
