Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Opposes Proposed Cow Worship March, Stresses Peace and Respect for Local Traditions
Northeast Desk, 18th September: Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has taken a strong stance against potential unrest in Meghalaya, responding to a planned march by a Hindu group on October 2, advocating to declare the cow as the “mother of the nation.” Lyngdoh, who also serves as the Health and Family Welfare Minister, expressed concerns over external influences disturbing the state’s peace and cultural harmony.
Emphasising Meghalaya’s unique traditions, Lyngdoh cautioned that attempts to impose beliefs from outside the state could lead to discord. She highlighted the importance of mutual respect among India’s diverse ethnic groups and warned that any actions threatening to disrupt the peace would be met with legal consequences.
“Political dramas,” as she referred to such activities, should not be allowed to unsettle the state’s peaceful atmosphere. While acknowledging that diverse views exist, she urged a balance between freedom of expression and respect for local customs, reminding visitors to honour Meghalaya’s cultural practices just as they would expect their own traditions to be respected elsewhere.
