Meghalaya Central Puja Committee Condemns Desecration of Mawlynnong Church
Shillong: The Central Puja Committee (CPC) of Meghalaya has strongly condemned an incident involving Akash Sagar, accused of desecrating a church in Mawlynnong, East Khasi Hills. A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, has triggered widespread outrage.
In the video, Sagar is seen walking onto the church pulpit and singing “Jay Siya Ram,” an act that many view as a violation of the religious sanctity of the church.
CPC president N Bhattacharjee issued a statement on Friday, denouncing the act and urging a thorough investigation and strict legal action against the accused. Bhattacharjee emphasized that such irresponsible actions should not be allowed to “disrupt the religious harmony” that has been a hallmark of Meghalaya for generations.
The CPC called for the preservation of the state’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence among diverse faiths. It urged the district administration to address the matter urgently, ensuring that incidents like this do not set a harmful precedent.
The video has drawn criticism from multiple sections of society, with many highlighting the importance of respecting religious sanctity and promoting mutual respect among communities in Meghalaya.
