Meghalaya Chief Minister Chairs Review Meeting on State Zoo Progress
Northeast Desk, 3rd May: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma led a comprehensive review meeting with officials from the Meghalaya Forest and Environment Department on May 2 to assess the status of the state zoo construction.
Situated in Umtrew, Ri-Bhoi, the zoo, sprawling over 72 hectares, is nearing completion, as revealed by officials briefed during the session. They outlined plans for the zoo’s imminent operational phase, underscoring the establishment of amenities such as an interpretation center, with a special focus on catering to children.
Articulating his vision for the zoo, Chief Minister Sangma underscored its potential as a major tourist attraction, inviting visitors to explore Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity. He underscored the zoo’s pivotal role as a center for education, knowledge dissemination, and recreation.
Regarding management, Sangma proposed that while the department oversees zoo care and administration, day-to-day operations should be entrusted to qualified professionals capable of managing ticketing, parking, restaurants, and other facilities to enrich the visitor experience.
