Meghalaya CM Calls Khasi Students’ Union Leaders for Talks Amid Intensified Crackdown on Migrant Workers

Northeast Desk, 19th July: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has invited leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for a meeting on July 19, amid the union’s decision to intensify checks on migrant workers’ documents. The meeting was called through a letter sent by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah.

The KSU has been conducting document checks at construction sites across Khasi-Jaintia region for 12 days, resulting in over 2500 migrant workers being sent back for lack of valid documents. Despite police action against its members, the union has vowed to continue and intensify the checks, demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016.

KSU vice president Biangbor Paliar stated, “We won’t be deterred by daily police summonses. We’ll continue to ensure migrant workers have valid documents, sending a clear message to the government to implement ILP and MRSSA.” The meeting with the CM comes amid rising tensions between the government and the KSU over the issue.
