Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma Clarifies No Relocation of Places of Worship Amidst Shillong City Redevelopment Plans

Northeast Desk,1st July: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has affirmed that no places of worship will be relocated as part of the redevelopment and beautification plans for Shillong city. The chief minister emphasized that decisions regarding the urban master plan to enhance the city’s infrastructure and cultural vibrancy will only be made after thorough consultations with stakeholders.

Taking to the microblogging platform X, Sangma assured the public that no definitive actions have been taken regarding the relocation of any religious sites. He stated, “In regards to the redevelopment and urban master plan for Shillong city, no decision has been taken to relocate any place of worship. Whatever the government decides will be after consulting the stakeholders.”

This clarification follows the Meghalaya government’s intention to utilize approximately 25 acres of land to improve the city’s aesthetics, cultural offerings, and address traffic congestion issues. The planned initiatives include creating new walkways, developing green parks, and establishing museums, among other projects aimed at enhancing Shillong’s overall appeal.

In a significant development, the Police Bazar area in Shillong is set to undergo a transformative facelift with the construction of a modern business-cum-tourism center. This Rs 216 crore project, part of the Shillong Smart City initiative, aims to revitalize the area and is scheduled for completion within a year. The initiative is expected to redefine the landscape of Police Bazar, offering new opportunities and amenities for residents and visitors alike.
