Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma Unveils Film Production Grant and OTT Platform Expansion

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced a significant boost to the state’s film industry by unveiling a financial grant initiative at the Hello Meghalaya Conclave 2024.

The program awarded Rs 35 lakh each to prominent local filmmakers Dominic Sangma, Pradip Kurbah, and Simi Khongtiang, underscoring the state’s commitment to nurturing creative talent.

The financial grant initiative aligns with Meghalaya’s efforts to support its burgeoning entertainment industry. Filmmakers can access up to Rs 5 lakh per project through this scheme, with additional funding available for films achieving national or international recognition.

This announcement complements the state’s focus on its Over-The-Top (OTT) platform, ‘Hello Meghalaya’, launched in July 2023. As India’s second state-run OTT platform after Kerala’s, ‘Hello Meghalaya’ has become a hub for local content creators, offering them financial and promotional support.

The OTT platform enables musicians, filmmakers, and short video producers to upload their work and receive funding. Content creators can earn up to Rs 18,000 per month for frequent uploads, with potential for additional income based on their content’s popularity.

The platform also incentivizes producers of short videos and films, encouraging a wider range of creative projects. It aims to foster local storytelling while connecting Meghalaya’s cultural narratives with broader audiences.

Since its launch, ‘Hello Meghalaya’ has emerged as a key player in boosting the state’s entertainment sector. By providing grants and revenue opportunities, the government is actively working to position Meghalaya as a hub for creativity and innovation in the Northeast.

CM Sangma’s announcement highlights the government’s vision to empower local talent and ensure Meghalaya’s stories reach audiences across India and beyond.
