Meghalaya: CM Conrad Sangma Inaugurates Iconic National Flag Mast, Unveils Ambitious Redevelopment Plan for Barik
Northeast Desk, 3rd September: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated a towering 131-feet National Flag Mast at Barik Point, Shillong, marking a significant moment in the state’s journey toward national pride and unity. The new landmark, prominently positioned in the heart of the city, symbolizes the diverse cultural fabric of India, which Sangma emphasized as a source of immense pride.
During the event, Sangma also unveiled an ambitious master plan for the redevelopment of Barik. This strategic initiative aims to transform the area into a vibrant public space and a key tourist attraction, reflecting the rich diversity of the nation. The project will see Barik renamed and redesigned to serve as an iconic destination in Shillong.
Expressing his vision for the redevelopment, CM Sangma took to social media, stating, “Our National Flag stands tall in Barik Point, Shillong—a proud symbol of our nation’s unity and diversity. Fills me with immense pride to inaugurate the 131 feet tall National Flag Mast this morning.” He further added, “Happy to unveil the Master Plan for the Redevelopment of Barik. We will rename Barik and redevelop it to an iconic public space and tourist attraction with elements that will showcase the diversity of our nation.”
The chief minister’s announcement follows his earlier commitment made on March 24 to invest Rs 25 crore in constructing a world-class Skywalk connecting Khyndailad (Police Bazar) to Barik Point. This project is part of a broader effort to enhance pedestrian movement and improve urban infrastructure in Shillong.
Additionally, Sangma highlighted that the government has completed a comprehensive plan to address the city’s chronic traffic congestion. This includes the purchase of 30 buses under the “Shared School Bus System” for Rs 10 crore. Future initiatives such as junction improvements, parking expansions, and the introduction of electric buses are scheduled to begin in the 2023-2024 period, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including DGP Idashisha Nongrang, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, and Sports & Youth Affairs Department Secretary Isawanda Laloo, who expressed their support for the redevelopment plans, which are set to position Shillong as a key destination in Northeast India.
