Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Reviews Relief Operations Amid Flash Flood Crisis, Announces Ex-Gratia for Victims
Northeast Desk, 5th October: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma convened an urgent review meeting today to assess the state’s response to flash floods and landslides, which have severely impacted the South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills districts. The incessant rainfall since midnight has caused widespread devastation, with Dalu in West Garo Hills being one of the worst-hit areas, along with Gasuapara in South Garo Hills, where a vital bridge was washed away.
The chief minister announced an ex-gratia payment for the families of three individuals who tragically lost their lives in Dalu due to the disaster. Additionally, seven more people were killed in a landslide in Hatiasia Songma village, under Gasuapara police station.
To ensure efficient relief and rescue efforts, CM Sangma directed district administrations to seek state assistance. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations in the affected areas. Road connectivity between Dalu and Baghmara has been disrupted due to multiple landslides. The chief minister instructed officials to identify alternative routes to restore road access in the region.
In response to bridges being washed away, CM Sangma has recommended constructing Bailey bridges, a modular, prefabricated bridge system that can be quickly assembled and is well-suited for emergency situations. He further informed that all wooden bridges in the state have been identified for replacement with more durable structures.
Efforts to restore electricity in the flood-affected areas are underway, and power is expected to be restored to most regions by the end of the day, easing public distress and aiding ongoing relief operations.
CM Sangma urged the administration and officials to remain on high alert and continuously monitor the evolving situation, ensuring swift and coordinated disaster response.
