Meghalaya CM Inaugurates Babies’ Critical Care Unit, Sets Ambitious Goals for State Healthcare

Northeast, August 18, 2024 — Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Babies’ Critical Care Unit at Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Health Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare sector. During the inauguration, CM Sangma announced that the government is committed to operationalizing the Shillong Medical College by 2025 and the Tura Medical College by 2026. He emphasized that the government has allocated 9 percent of the state’s budget to the medical and health sector, underlining the administration’s focus on improving healthcare facilities across Meghalaya.

The newly inaugurated critical care unit at Ganesh Das Hospital is a pioneering initiative in Meghalaya’s government hospitals, equipped with Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU), Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), and Maternal and Newborn Care Units (MNCU). Operational since May 1, the 30-bed complex includes six advanced NICU beds and a dedicated 10-bed maternal and newborn care unit. This facility, the first of its kind in the state, was funded through PMJAY-MHIS, with additional contributions from Meghalayan Medical Drugs and Services Limited, and staffing support from the DHS-MI office.

During the event, CM Sangma highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services in rural areas, aiming to provide equitable healthcare access across the state. The new facility at Ganesh Das Hospital represents a crucial step in improving maternal and child health in Meghalaya, reflecting the state’s broader commitment to bolstering its healthcare infrastructure.
