Meghalaya CM Inspects Fire-Damaged Tura Bazar, Assures Support for Affected Shop Owners
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited Tura Bazar on Saturday to assess the extensive damage caused by a fire that erupted on October 16.
The blaze, which began around 2 AM, devastated at least 17 shops and significantly disrupted business activities in the area. Initial reports indicate that the fire was triggered by an electrical issue.
During his visit, CM Sangma met with affected shop owners and expressed his empathy for the families impacted by the incident.
He assured them that the government is committed to developing a plan to help restore their livelihoods and facilitate the resumption of business activities.
Taking to the microblogging platform X, the Chief Minister stated, “The recent Tura Bazar fire incident destroyed the livelihoods of many families. Inspected the damages in the market area today and met the shop owners. We will work out something to ensure the businesses function again.”
In response to the emergency, authorities promptly deployed five fire trucks to the scene to extinguish the flames. The estimated property damage from the fire is approximately Rs 1 crore.
Local officials are currently working to evaluate the full extent of the damages and develop a recovery strategy for the affected community.
