Meghalaya CM Lays Foundation for Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme

Shillong: Amid persistent water scarcity in Tura, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on January 27 laid the foundation stone for the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme in the West Garo Hills municipality.

This ambitious project, valued at ₹398.48 crore, aims to address the water needs of 37 localities in the region.

The scheme comes as a response to increasing urbanisation, which has placed immense pressure on Tura’s existing water supply infrastructure.

Earlier phases of water projects, initiated in the 1970s, fell short of meeting the town’s growing demand, leading to frequent water rationing.

Designed to cater to a projected population of 270,000 by 2055, the new water supply scheme is expected to ensure a sustainable and reliable solution for the region’s current and future needs.

During the event, Chief Minister Sangma also distributed benefits under the CM Elevate and Tourism Infrastructure Scheme, reflecting the state government’s focus on holistic development and infrastructure enhancement in the region.
