Meghalaya CM Orders Probe into Soaring Prices of Essential Commodities
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has directed an immediate investigation into the rising costs of essential commodities across the state, following an emergency meeting with the Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department and key stakeholders on February 6. The move comes in response to growing public concern over inflation and its impact on household budgets.
A newly established task force will spearhead the inquiry, focusing on pricing patterns across the supply chain, particularly for meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables. The team has been tasked with identifying bottlenecks and potential price manipulation from producers to consumers, ensuring that unfair pricing practices do not burden the public.
Authorities will analyze markup practices at various distribution stages and recommend concrete measures to stabilise prices. Recent market surveys have revealed significant price disparities between wholesale and retail sectors, raising concerns over inefficiencies and possible speculative pricing.
The government has assured that while consumer protection remains a priority, it will also work to ensure fair returns for businesses operating within legal frameworks. The findings of the investigation are expected to shape new policies aimed at curbing unjustified price hikes and promoting transparency in the state’s market economy.
