Meghalaya CM Reviews Key Projects, Sets 2026 Target for Shillong Medical College

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on August 28 chaired a high-level review meeting in Tura to assess progress on major development projects, including medical colleges, sports infrastructure, and the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Sangma said that construction of the Tura Medical College is nearing completion, while the government is working towards starting classes at the Shillong Medical College by September 2026. With Shillong, Tura, and the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) medical colleges operational, the state is projected to produce over 550 doctors annually, significantly boosting its healthcare capacity.

On sports, the chief minister emphasized grassroots development, announcing that tournaments will be organized at village and block levels to nurture young talent across disciplines, including athletics, chess, and indigenous sports.

Reviewing the JJM, Sangma noted that while reports indicate 90% completion, about 20% of households still lack access to water. He ordered a state-wide audit of all Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to ensure that every home is covered.

“These reviews are not just to get updates but to identify challenges, find solutions together, and ensure projects stay on track for timely delivery,” Sangma said. He reiterated that the government’s priority is to resolve bottlenecks, improve delivery, and keep citizens at the centre of every decision.
