Meghalaya CM to Seek Defence Minister’s Assistance on Harijan Colony Relocation
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to approach Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to facilitate the relocation of 342 families residing in Harijan Colony at Them Iew Mawlong.
The relocation proposal involves the allotment of defence land, a decision pending the outcome of discussions with the Union Minister.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed the planned meeting, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to resolving the long-standing issue. “The allocation of land depends on the outcome of the meeting between the CM and the Defence Minister. The government is determined to find a solution at the earliest,” Dhar stated.
The relocation plans were initiated after violent clashes erupted in the area in 2018, leading to the formation of a committee tasked with assessing the relocation process. Despite this, the families have waited years for a resolution.
The state government has yet to identify a specific site for relocation. However, the proposal to utilize defence land reflects efforts to expedite the process and address the concerns of the affected families.
The move underscores the government’s intention to ensure peace and provide a suitable alternative for the residents, whose resettlement has remained a contentious and unresolved issue.
