Meghalaya College Principals’ Council Urges Urgent NEHU Academic Council Meeting Amid CUET Transition

Shillong: The Meghalaya College Principals’ Council (MCPC) has called for an urgent meeting of the Academic Council of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to address key unresolved academic and administrative issues critical to higher education in the state.

MCPC President Dr Eureka FP Lyngdoh flagged several pressing concerns, including:
• Approval of fourth-year undergraduate syllabi under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
• Streamlining of affiliation processes
• Regulatory alignment with the new curriculum framework

These issues have gained heightened urgency as Meghalaya transitions to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) system in the current academic session.

The Council praised NEHU’s Examinations Department for successfully conducting undergraduate semester exams in November–December 2024 amid institutional challenges. Notably, this included the first assessments of 26 vocational training courses introduced under NEP 2020.

NEHU is the sole affiliating university for nearly 85 higher education institutions across Meghalaya, impacting approximately 75,000 students. With CUET now in place, the university has already drafted admission guidelines for both CUET-qualified candidates and students without CUET scores.

The MCPC warned that delays in resolving these matters could jeopardise the academic future of thousands of students. It has urged NEHU authorities and all stakeholders to act swiftly in convening the Academic Council meeting and prioritise systemic clarity and student welfare.
