Meghalaya Colleges Not Mandated to Affiliate with State University, Clarifies CM Sangma
Northeast Desk, 6th June: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on June 5 clarified that colleges in the state are not required to affiliate with the Captain Williamson Sangma State University. He emphasized that no law mandates such an affiliation, and colleges can choose to remain affiliated with either the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) or the State University.
However, Sangma noted that colleges affiliated with NEHU would necessitate students to take the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admissions.
Sangma announced plans to establish campus sites across various parts of the state. For colleges in Shillong and the eastern regions, a local office will be set up to address their concerns, ensuring convenience and minimizing travel.
The Chief Minister explained that the State University Bill, which led to the creation of the Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University in the Garo Hills, was passed before his administration took office. His government converted it into a full-fledged State University to alleviate CUET-related issues affecting students.
Sangma assured that the State University would develop multiple campuses and branches throughout Meghalaya to facilitate college affiliations and provide comprehensive student services. Initially, government colleges like Kiang Nangbah would be affiliated. Offices and campuses will be strategically established to support easy affiliation and ongoing assistance for colleges statewide.
