Meghalaya Congress Condemns VPP’s Absence from Lok Sabha Speaker Election Ceremony

Northeast Desk, 28th June: The Meghalaya Congress has strongly criticized the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for abstaining from the election ceremony for the post of Speaker of Lok Sabha, held on June 26.

Ronnie V Lyngdoh, a prominent Congress leader, expressed disappointment over the VPP’s decision to remain absent from this crucial event. He argued that the VPP’s absence indicates a lack of firm conviction and urged the party to clarify its stance. Lyngdoh emphasized that neutrality in such significant proceedings cannot justify abstention and demanded that the VPP provide a clear explanation for its absence on the pivotal election day.

During the ceremony, VPP’s Member of Parliament (MP), Ricky AJ Syngkon, chose not to participate, opting not to align with either the NDA or the INDIA blocs.

In contrast, Tura MP Saleng Sangma from the Congress attended the ceremony and actively supported the Congress-led INDIA alliance candidate against the NDA’s nominee.

Om Birla, the candidate backed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was subsequently appointed as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha following the voting process.
