Meghalaya: Congress MLA Saleng A Sangma to Resign Following Lok Sabha Victory
Northeast Desk, 10th June: Newly-elected Lok Sabha MP Saleng A Sangma is poised to tender his resignation as the Congress MLA from Gambegre constituency on June 10, according to reliable sources. Sangma clinched a parliamentary seat by securing victory over NPP’s Agatha Sangma in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Under the Constitution of India, individuals are barred from concurrently holding the positions of Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). As a result, Sangma’s resignation from the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is imperative to comply with legal provisions.
His impending departure from the state assembly will trigger a by-election in the Gambegre constituency. The Congress party, currently represented by five elected members in the state legislature, will witness a reduction to four members subsequent to Sangma’s resignation.
