Meghalaya Congress Women Demand Pornography Website Ban Amid Child Safety Concerns

Shillong: The women’s wing of the Congress party in Meghalaya has urgently appealed to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for the immediate implementation of a statewide ban on all pornographic websites. This demand comes in response to escalating anxieties surrounding the increasing incidence of sexual offenses targeting children within the state.

Joplyn Scott Shylla, the president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC), formally conveyed the organization’s deep concerns in a letter addressed directly to the Chief Minister. In her communication, Shylla underscored what she characterized as an alarming pattern of rising sexual violence cases where young individuals are becoming victims across Meghalaya.

The MPMC has articulated its belief that the readily available nature of online pornography is having a detrimental impact on young minds and may be a contributing factor to the perpetration of sexual assaults against minors. The organization contends that restricting access to such content is a crucial step in safeguarding the state’s children.

Beyond the core demand for a ban on pornography websites, the women’s Congress has put forth a series of supplementary recommendations aimed at bolstering child protection. These proposed measures include the strengthening of cyber surveillance mechanisms, the imposition of more stringent regulations on internet content, fostering closer collaboration between internet service providers and law enforcement agencies, and the initiation of comprehensive educational campaigns within schools and communities to promote digital safety awareness.

The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress firmly believes that the adoption of these multifaceted actions holds the potential to significantly enhance the safety and security of children in Meghalaya, where the issue of crimes against minors has emerged as a pressing concern for the public at large.
