Meghalaya Congress Women Demand Stricter Online Porn Controls Amid Child Safety Fears
Shillong: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) has intensified its campaign for tighter regulations on online pornography, citing a direct correlation between its accessibility and the rising incidents of sexual abuse against young girls in the state. They have formally re-submitted their urgent appeal to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, pushing for immediate government action.
The MPMC alleges that the unchecked availability of explicit online material is significantly impacting minors, particularly boys, leading to a surge in inappropriate and criminal behavior targeting young girls. They warn that this disturbing trend points to a deep-seated societal issue demanding swift and decisive government intervention.
In their renewed appeal, the MPMC outlined a comprehensive strategy, advocating not only for the restriction of pornographic websites but also for a series of proactive measures. These include the implementation of state-sponsored digital safety campaigns in educational institutions and communities, the strengthening of cyber surveillance capabilities, collaborative efforts with internet service providers and law enforcement agencies, and the initiation of educational programs for both young people and parents, highlighting the perils of online pornography.
The organization asserts that these multifaceted interventions are indispensable for protecting children and addressing the escalating moral and social crisis. They have also expressed their commitment to supporting any government initiatives aimed at achieving these objectives.
This renewed call to action follows the MPMC’s prior appeal on April 18, where they first urged for a statewide ban on pornographic websites, directly linking the prevalence of such content to the alarming increase in sexual offenses against minors.
