Meghalaya Cracks Down on VIP Culture, Limits Siren, Tinted Glass Use
Shillong: In a move to curb the growing perception of VIP culture, the Meghalaya government is set to introduce stringent regulations on the use of sirens, tinted windows, and flickering lights on vehicles.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Friday that the state administration will soon finalize a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to address public grievances regarding the misuse of these modifications.
“We’ve been receiving numerous complaints from citizens about the excessive use of these privileges,” Sangma said. While acknowledging the need for security measures for certain individuals, he emphasized that such measures should not be used to flaunt power or status.
The proposed SOP, which is expected to be presented to the Cabinet next week, will outline specific guidelines for the use of these vehicle modifications, including who can use them and under what circumstances.
The decision comes after a high-level meeting involving the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Director-General of Police. The government aims to strike a balance between ensuring the safety of protected individuals and minimizing public inconvenience.
“We understand the importance of security for those who require it, but we cannot allow it to become a symbol of privilege,” Sangma added. “The new regulations will help us address this issue without compromising on necessary security measures.”
