Meghalaya: Deputy Chief Minister Orders Inquiry into Alleged Police Instigation of Dog Attack at Dawki Police Station

Northeast Desk, 14th June: In response to allegations that police instigated a dog to bite and injure a resident detained at Dawki police station, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The directive follows a complaint by National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) president Kitboklang Nongrem on June 13, who reported that on June 12, a Pyrdiwah resident was detained by Dawki police on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi national and allegedly subjected to inhumane treatment involving a dog attack.

Nongrem condemned the use of excessive force, labeling it as “inhuman and unacceptable,” and stressed that while police have the authority to detain suspects, torture cannot be condoned. He urged for stringent action against the responsible officials once the investigation confirms the facts.

Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong has instructed the West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police to initiate a probe immediately.

Meanwhile, the police have refuted the allegations of a deliberate dog attack on the detainee, Solin Suting, from Nongtalang village. According to a police spokesperson, Suting was detained around 2 am during a night patrol due to his resemblance to a Bangladeshi national and possession of a Bangladeshi ID. The spokesperson stated that Suting was brought to the station for questioning and verification, during which an accidental dog bite occurred. Suting reportedly declined medical treatment, preferring to handle it himself with the help of a local doctor.

Suting was later released and transported to his Pyrdiwah residence at his request. His family took him to Nongtalang Community Health Center, where he received treatment and has since been discharged.
