Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Unveils Landmark Book on Khasi Traditions
Northeast Desk, 11th August: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong of Meghalaya unveiled the groundbreaking book MEI: Matrilineal Exogamous Institution by Raphael Warjri at a distinguished ceremony held at the Lariti International Cultural and Performing Arts Centre. The event, hosted by Riti Academy in collaboration with INTACH Meghalaya, was attended by leading figures from Northeast India.
The book delves into the intricate Khasi matrilineal traditions and explores the impact of contemporary changes on these customs. It includes a thorough analysis of Khasi society, enriched by mitochondrial DNA studies, and provides an extensive catalogue of Khasi clans, including newer ones.
Notable attendees at the release included Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, and Promod Boro of the Bodoland Territorial Council. Their presence underscored the significance of Warjri’s work in documenting and preserving regional cultural practices.
In addition to the book launch, the event featured the unveiling of a full-length statue of Rev. J. J. M. Nichols Roy, an instrumental figure in the establishment of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The statue, crafted by artists from Riti Academy, stands as a tribute to Roy’s pivotal role in advancing regional autonomy and preserving indigenous heritage.
