Meghalaya Deputy CM Warns HNLC on Peace Talks, Says the Window Will Not Stay Open Forever
Shillong: Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, has issued a stern warning to the banned militant group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), emphasizing that the state’s offer for peace talks will not remain open indefinitely.
Tynsong’s remarks come after repeated appeals by the Meghalaya government, urging the HNLC to engage in peace negotiations.
He reiterated that the doors for talks are still open, with the Central government also supporting the initiative.
However, he cautioned that if the HNLC continues to reject the invitation, the government may cease further appeals for dialogue.
This warning follows a significant development in November 2024, when the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the ban on the HNLC for another five years, declaring it and its factions as an unlawful association.
The ban, which came into effect immediately, was imposed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, due to concerns over activities threatening India’s sovereignty and integrity, including secession, extortion, and insurgency.
