Meghalaya earmarks Rs 1,000 crores for sports infrastructure development over the next five years
Northeast Desk, 12th October: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma made a significant announcement today, committing to invest close to Rs 1,000 crores over the next five years to boost sports development in the state. This announcement was made during the foundation-laying ceremony for the Rongjeng Stadium in East Garo Hills on October 12, showcasing the state’s dedication to sports development.
The ongoing Rongjeng Stadium project, with an estimated cost of Rs 9.25 crores, includes the development of a football ground and the construction of a spectators’ gallery. The ceremony was attended by Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, as well as MLAs Jim Sangma and Rupert Momin.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma used this opportunity to celebrate the visionary spirit of the late PA Sangma, emphasizing his deep connection with Rongjeng and its people. He highlighted that the creation of Rongjeng Sub Division and various other infrastructure projects in the region reflects PA Sangma’s vision for the area.
Sangma revealed that in the past five years, the government allocated a budget of over Rs 400 crores for sports development, marking a significant increase compared to the past decades. Looking forward, he unveiled an ambitious plan to allocate nearly ₹1,000 crores in the next five years to further expand sports infrastructure across the state.
Sangma also highlighted the government’s vision to upgrade 25 football playgrounds with artificial turf.
This year, Tura will host the Meghalaya Games 2023, attracting over 3,000 athletes from across the state. Chief Minister Sangma emphasized their focus on creating better infrastructure and providing a platform for the youth to showcase their talents.
Sangma also informed the public about the CM Elevate program, which supports entrepreneurs in establishing various business ventures, encouraging people to take advantage of this initiative.
Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, speaking on the occasion, reiterated the government’s commitment to sports promotion in Meghalaya. He declared, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, we have been working to provide better sports infrastructure in the state, with the goal of making Meghalaya a sports capital.”
The foundation-laying ceremony was accompanied by the final match of the MLA Cup between United Shallang FC and Balbarian Sports Club Rongjeng, highlighting the active engagement of the local community in sports development.
